18 traffic accidents reported in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace during April 2026
Authorities in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace recorded 18 traffic accidents and fatal crashes across the region in April 2026, according to figures released by the regional police directorate.
Data published by the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace covered road safety incidents and traffic enforcement operations in the regional units of Evros, Rodopi, Xanthi, Kavala, Thasos, and Drama.
Fatal Crashes Increase Compared to 2025
The report showed an increase in traffic incidents compared to April 2025, when 14 accidents had been recorded.
Among the 18 incidents reported in April 2026 were:
Police said the accidents resulted in 19 casualties overall, including:
- 2 fatalities
- 3 seriously injured individuals
- 14 people with minor injuries
Despite the rise in fatalities, the total number of injured persons slightly declined compared to the same period last year.
Main Causes Identified by Police
According to traffic police investigations, the primary causes behind the accidents included traffic sign violations and incorrect evasive maneuvers by drivers.
Authorities stressed that both urban and rural road networks across the region remain under continuous traffic monitoring and enforcement operations aimed at reducing accidents and improving road safety.
More Than 8,500 Traffic Violations Recorded
During April, police officers issued a total of 8,562 traffic violations, including 1,891 classified as dangerous offenses.
The most common serious violations included:
- 1,161 speeding offenses
- 201 seatbelt violations
- 140 helmet violations
- 103 red-light violations
- 90 cases of driving in the opposite lane
- 80 drunk-driving offenses
- 62 cases involving mobile phone use while driving
Additional violations included illegal overtaking, dangerous maneuvers, worn tires, and failure to yield.
Police officials said traffic enforcement measures will continue throughout the region as part of broader efforts to prevent road accidents and improve driver behavior.
