Fatal road accidents decrease in December 2025
The General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has released comprehensive road safety and traffic policing statistics for December 2025, covering the regional units of Meriç, Rodopi, İskeçe, Kavala, Thasos, and Drama. The data are presented alongside comparative figures from December 2024.
Fewer Accidents and Fatalities Compared to Last Year
According to the report, a total of 21 road traffic accidents were recorded in December 2025 (compared to 15 in December 2024). These included:
- 2 fatal accidents (down from 7 in 2024)
- 1 serious accident (unchanged from 2024)
- 18 minor accidents (up from 7 in 2024)
- Despite an overall increase in total accidents, the number of fatalities saw a significant decline.
A total of 30 casualties were recorded in both urban and rural areas of the region (up from 24 in 2024), broken down as follows:
- 3 fatalities (down from 7 in 2024)
- 1 seriously injured person (same as 2024)
- 26 slightly injured persons (up from 16 in 2024)
- Main Causes of Traffic Accidents
Police investigations identified the primary causes of traffic accidents as:
- Violation of road signs
- Failure to yield right of way
- Driving in the opposite lane
- Driver distraction
Over 1,000 Speeding Violations Recorded
As part of traffic enforcement operations in December 2025, police recorded a total of 8,607 traffic violations, of which 1,483 were classified as dangerous. These included:
- 1,024 for excessive speed
- 90 for failure to wear a seatbelt
- 73 for driving under the influence of alcohol
- 73 for failure to wear a protective helmet
- 80 for running a red light
- 57 for driving in the opposite lane
- 51 for using a mobile phone while driving
- 6 for worn tires
- 22 for illegal overtaking
- 4 for dangerous maneuvers
- 3 for failure to yield right of way
Authorities reiterated that speeding, alcohol consumption, and failure to use seatbelts or helmets remain among the most serious traffic violations and key risk factors for road accidents in the region.
