Eastern Macedonia and Thrace police record 44 helmet violations in 991 checks

Greek police recorded 44 violations for failure to wear a protective helmet during 991 targeted checks across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace between Aug. 10 and 16, 2026, as part of a nationwide road-safety campaign.

Police services across the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace carried out 991 targeted checks on two-wheelers, light personal electric vehicles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) over a one-week period, resulting in 44 violations for failure to use a protective helmet.

The checks were conducted as part of the Hellenic Police campaign titled "Zero Tolerance for Failure to Wear a Helmet," which aims to achieve widespread compliance among drivers and passengers of motorcycles and other two-wheelers, as well as users of light personal electric vehicles.

Traffic police officers from the police directorates of Orestiada, Dedeağaç, Rodop, İskeçe, Kavala and Drama participated in the targeted operations.

Two-wheeler riders account for most violations
The checks focused on motorcycle and moped riders, three-wheelers, rental vehicles without enclosed cabins and professional delivery riders.

Officers examined whether both drivers and passengers were complying with mandatory helmet requirements.

Of the 44 violations recorded during the campaign:

  • 27 involved two-wheeler drivers.
  • 15 involved users of light personal electric vehicles.
  • 2 involved ATV drivers, commonly known as "quads."

The police operations covered both conventional motorcycles and other forms of personal transportation that are increasingly present on the region's roads.

Road-safety awareness activities also held
Alongside enforcement operations, officers from the Rodop Police Directorate conducted information sessions in areas under their jurisdiction.

The presentations focused on mandatory helmet use, road safety and traffic education, with the aim of raising awareness about the risks associated with riding without appropriate protective equipment.

The Hellenic Police said targeted helmet checks will continue throughout Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Authorities emphasized that wearing a protective helmet is one of the most important measures available to reduce the risk of serious injury for both drivers and passengers in the event of a road accident.
