Nearly 400 new traffic cameras to monitor red-light violations across Greater Athens
Authorities have completed the installation of 388 new traffic enforcement cameras at 100 intersections across Greater Athens as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce red-light violations.
The Italian-made cameras have been mounted on newly installed pylons and are positioned to monitor the rear of vehicles approaching traffic lights.
The system is designed to activate automatically when a traffic signal turns red. Vehicles that cross the white stop line after the light changes will be photographed, with the images used to identify traffic violations.
The first 100 cameras are expected to become operational in August, with the remaining units to be activated gradually.
Before any penalty is issued, recorded violations will be reviewed by traffic police officers for final verification. Once confirmed, fines will be sent electronically to motorists through their mobile phones or via the gov.gr digital government platform.
