Eastern Macedonia & Thrace: 869 police checks, 23 fines issued in one week for helmet violations
Police authorities in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) conducted 869 traffic inspections within a single week as part of the nationwide “Zero Tolerance for Not Wearing a Helmet” campaign, issuing a total of 23 violations.
The checks were carried out between February 2 and February 8, 2026, by officers of the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Targeted Road Safety Campaign
The operation forms part of Greece’s broader road safety strategy aimed at achieving gradual and universal compliance with mandatory helmet use among riders of two-wheeled vehicles and Light Personal Electric Vehicles (LPEVs), such as electric scooters.
Traffic police units from the Directorates of Kumçiftliği, Dedeağaç, Rhodope, İskeçe, Kavala, and Drama conducted targeted inspections focusing on:
- Moped and motorcycle riders
- Three-wheeled vehicle operators
- Drivers of rental open-body vehicles
- Professional delivery drivers
- Operators of Light Personal Electric Vehicles (LPEVs)
Authorities checked both drivers and passengers for compliance with helmet regulations.
Breakdown of Violations
During the week-long enforcement action, police recorded:
- 19 violations involving motorcycle and moped riders
- 4 violations involving Light Personal Electric Vehicle (LPEV) operators
Greek authorities continue to emphasize that helmet use significantly reduces the risk of fatal and severe head injuries in road accidents.
The “Zero Tolerance” campaign is expected to continue with regular inspections across the region, reinforcing road safety standards and aiming to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
