Famellos demands government resignation amid accusations of scandal and cover-up
Leader of the opposition SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, Sokratis Famellos, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a heated parliamentary session on Tuesday, following the government’s referral of former minister Kostas Karamanlis to the Judicial Council.
“He is the prime minister of a government marred by scandal,” Famellos declared. “Scandals against democracy – wiretapping. Scandals concerning public safety and transportation – Tempi. Scandals involving misuse of public funds – OPEKEPE. Need I go on? We have plenty.”
Famellos criticized the day’s parliamentary proceedings, calling them a “provocation and an insult to Greek society,” and labeled them “blatantly unconstitutional and unlawful.” He called for the immediate suspension of the session and insisted on a full and independent investigation.
Addressing New Democracy lawmakers directly, he asked: “Now that the Tempi tragedy is before the Plenary, will you choose to bury it? Will you bear that moral burden? Are you truly willing to cover up a tragedy that sparked mass protests across the country?”
The opposition leader accused the ruling party of attempting to whitewash responsibility and undermine the justice process. “Through your actions today, you are leaving a permanent stain on Greek democracy. You are not just a corrupt government—you are a threat to democracy and justice,” he said.
Calling for general elections, Famellos urged the resignation of the Mitsotakis government, vowing that SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance is prepared to lead the country forward. “This callous and cronyist administration must be replaced by a progressive and democratic government. The sooner you leave, the better for everyone—and for our country.”
