Falakro Ski Resort returns strongly in 2025

The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is once again fully prepared for the operation of the Falakro Ski Resort, following last year’s successful season, which was marked by increased visitor numbers. This success was no coincidence; it stemmed from targeted actions, strategic planning, and the determination of the current regional administration to restore Falakro to its rightful position as one of Greece’s key mountain destinations.

After five years of inactivity and abandonment under the previous administration, the new Regional Authority laid the foundation for the resort’s reopening in 2024, overcoming bureaucratic obstacles and long-standing structural issues.

It is worth noting that within less than one month of assuming office, the administration under Christodoulos Topsidis submitted a study to a call issued by the Ministry of Tourism—an opportunity the previous authority failed to seize in time, resulting in lost progress. This initiative demonstrated the current administration’s readiness and commitment to act with vision and planning, leaving behind a valuable blueprint for future funding opportunities.

Since taking office, the Region has worked responsibly to serve citizens, businesses, and stakeholders in Drama. It secured certification of the facilities and ensured compliance with the Ministry of Tourism’s operational standards. With allocated funds totaling €735,000, the administration succeeded in reopening the historic “Pista tou Pappou” (Grandfather’s Slope) after 16 years of inactivity, as well as the four-seat chairlift and the chalet, offering visitors an upgraded and enjoyable experience.

The year 2024 marked the first major challenge—and it was successfully met. The Region acknowledged past deficiencies, acted responsibly, and continued its efforts into 2025, overseeing snow-clearing procedures, technical support, and infrastructure maintenance.

As a result, the Falakro Ski Resort will once again be ready to welcome its visitors this season.

But the Region’s planning extends far beyond the current operational year.
A new proposal worth €150,000 is being prepared within the framework of the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) program for the mountainous area. The goal is to develop Falakro into a four-season destination, with initiatives such as hiking trails, climbing routes, and outdoor activity networks.

At the same time, work is underway for the long-term development of the resort through the creation of a masterplan and the exploration of sustainable management options via the Region’s Development Organization, ensuring stable operation and continuous service improvement.

All these efforts are grounded in the excellent cooperation between Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis and Deputy Regional Governor Argyris Patakakis, who demonstrated dedication from the outset during both the preparation and operational phases of the project. The contribution of Deputy Regional Governor of Drama Michalis Mourvetidis was also crucial, as he oversaw technical operations and ensured smooth coordination within the Technical Service. His active involvement played a key role in completing necessary procedures on time and upholding technical standards.

The reopening of Falakro is more than an infrastructure project—it is a symbol of changed mentality and effective governance. Major transformations do not happen overnight; they require vision, consistency, and genuine commitment to public service. These principles lie at the heart of the current administration of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
