Turkish marbling art showcased at cultural workshop in Athens
The traditional Turkish art of **ebru**, or paper marbling, was introduced to Greek and international participants during a cultural workshop hosted by **Hala Erciyes**, the spouse of Türkiye's ambassador to Greece, at the Turkish Embassy Residence in Athens.
The event brought together around 40 guests, including businesswomen, female dignitaries, and the spouses of foreign ambassadors and senior Greek officials.
Artists demonstrate centuries-old technique
Turkish ebru artist **Kubilay Eralp Dinçer** and Greek artist **Katherina Momitsa** jointly led the workshop, presenting the history and techniques of the centuries-old art form.
Participants had the opportunity to create their own marbled designs by placing natural pigments on the surface of specially prepared water before transferring the unique patterns onto paper and wooden fans.
Celebrating a UNESCO-recognized heritage

Welcoming guests, Hala Erciyes described ebru as one of Türkiye's most distinguished traditional arts, noting that every design created through the technique is unique and cannot be replicated.
The workshop also highlighted that Turkish ebru was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
Instructors explained that the art requires patience, balance and an understanding of how natural pigments interact with water-based solutions to create distinctive patterns.
Building cultural bridges
Organizers said the event aimed to strengthen cultural dialogue and friendship between Türkiye and Greece through shared artistic experiences.
Dinçer noted that the flowing movements of pigments on water often evoke memories of natural patterns such as raindrops and reflections, creating a strong emotional connection with viewers.
Momitsa, who trained under Dinçer in Istanbul, said she continues to promote ebru in Athens through her studio, where she applies the traditional technique to a variety of materials, including textiles and ceramics.
