Local government amendment extends unpaid deputy mayor positions until 2028
The amendment aims to preserve the existing administrative framework after concerns emerged that provisions in Greece’s new Local Government Code could eliminate the legal basis for unpaid deputy mayor positions. Municipal authorities had warned that the change could create operational difficulties, particularly for smaller municipalities that rely on unpaid officials to carry out executive responsibilities.
Government officials said the measure is intended to ensure continuity in municipal administration while broader local government reforms are implemented. The amendment will allow municipalities to continue appointing unpaid deputy mayors under the current framework through 2028.
The move comes amid ongoing discussions over the modernization of Greece’s local government system and the distribution of administrative responsibilities between municipalities and the central government.
