Election speculation grows over possible September 27 vote

Speculation over the possibility of an early general election in Greece has intensified, with September 27 emerging as a potential date amid signs of government preparations, although Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has publicly maintained that elections will be held in the spring of 2027.

According to Greek media reports, several recent government actions have fueled speculation that the country could head to the polls earlier than previously expected. Among the developments cited are preparations for the postal voting registration platform, the procurement of security paper required for the electoral process, and efforts to complete key legislative initiatives before the autumn.

The ongoing constitutional revision process is also seen as a significant milestone. The first parliamentary vote is expected in the second half of July, followed by a second vote in late August. Once that process is completed, there would be no constitutional obstacle to dissolving parliament and calling an election if such a decision were made.

The report also points to the Selanik International Fair (TIF) in early September as a possible political turning point, with the prime minister expected to unveil a package of economic measures that could carry strong pre-election significance.

Despite the growing speculation, Mitsotakis has repeatedly stated that Greece's next parliamentary elections are planned for the spring of 2027, and no official decision on an early vote has been announced.
