Changes to the unemployment pension and other state benefits coming

Changes to the unemployment pension and other benefits are coming, Labour Minister Niki Kerameus announced to ERT.

Changes to the unemployment pension

Minister Kerameus stated that the unemployment pension will now depend on the monthly earnings of the dismissed person, instead of the minimum wage. This means, in practice, that when an employee with a salary of 1000 euros is laid off, he or she can receive 700 or 750 euros in unemployment benefits per month, instead of the current 507 euros.

The unemployment benefit will decrease as the months go by, as the aim is to encourage the unemployed person's reintegration into the labour force. In addition, if the beneficiary rejects three job offers made by the Public Employment Agency, the unemployment benefit will be cut.

"The important thing here is that the system is front-loaded. We want you to make an effort to find a job. If you are offered three job offers that coincide with your individual action plan and you refuse all three, you will be removed from unemployment benefits."

Reduction in Insurance Premiums

Referring to the reduction in insurance premiums, the Minister said, "We want to support employees, but at the same time we must provide more support so that total non-wage costs can be reduced and businesses can move forward. This makes a significant contribution to the revitalisation of the economy and employment."

Increase in Child Benefit

Among the measures planned to solve demographic problems is the increase in child benefits paid by OPEKA. The decrease in the number of beneficiaries receiving child benefits due to the decrease in birth rates and the increase in nominal wages aims to provide more support to those with one or two children. Currently, 28.42 or 70 euros per child per month, depending on income criteria.

Adjustment in Housing Benefit

It is also planned to adjust the amount of housing benefit. Currently, OPEKA covers the rental costs of economically vulnerable beneficiaries up to 210 euros per month. It is also planned to create a single platform where beneficiaries can receive all benefits with a single application.
