Automated tax penalty system to launch in October

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will roll out a new automated system in October that issues fines to taxpayers who miss deadlines for income tax or value-added tax (VAT) returns.

The system, part of Greece’s broader digital modernization drive, will automatically calculate and notify penalties without bureaucratic delays. Officials say the goal is to strengthen compliance and reduce both negligence and intentional late filings.

According to AADE, fines will be set at €250 for late VAT submissions by businesses using simplified accounts, €500 for those with double-entry accounts, and €100 for late income tax returns. No fines will apply to amended returns, provided the original was submitted on time.

The automated mechanism will gradually expand to cover additional taxes in future phases. As part of its 2025–2029 strategy, authorities are also preparing to introduce real-time VAT collection, which would transfer VAT directly to the state at the moment of each transaction.
