Greece’s Development Ministry is preparing to launch a new digital platform aimed at helping consumers compare prices and combat unfair market practices, as authorities seek to strengthen oversight amid persistent inflationary pressures.
Greece plans AI-powered ‘PosoKanei’ platform to boost price transparency

The platform, named “PosoKanei” (“How Much?”), is expected to replace the existing e-katanalotis application and introduce artificial intelligence and real-time data analysis tools to improve market monitoring and consumer protection.

As part of the project, the ministry has invited market research firm Circana Hellas SA to submit a bid for the provision of information services to the platform, with the tender deadline set for May 26.

Under the proposed contract, the company will provide the Independent Authority for Market Surveillance and Consumer Protection (DIMEA) with data covering the 10,000 highest-volume supermarket products, known as Stock Keeping Units (SKU).

The database includes codes for both branded and private-label products sold across supermarket chains and is expected to form the core infrastructure of the new application, enabling consumers to monitor prices in real time, compare products and track price changes for everyday essentials.

The contract is valued at 11,352 euros, including VAT, and will be financed through the Development Ministry’s regular budget.

The initiative forms part of a broader 4.6-million-euro program designed to strengthen DIMEA through the use of artificial intelligence in “smart” market surveillance.

According to government officials, the new system will employ advanced data-analysis tools to identify unlawful commercial practices, classify consumer complaints, support ex officio inspections and facilitate the imposition of fines. The platform is also expected to assist administrative decision-making processes, allowing authorities to intervene more quickly and with greater accuracy.

Government sources said the objective is to establish a modern and unified market supervision mechanism modeled on systems already operating in several advanced European countries, where AI and digital data are increasingly used to track prices and tackle profiteering.

Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos described the initiative as “a highly significant institutional reform,” saying it marks the first time Greece will operate a coordinated mechanism dedicated to market supervision and consumer protection.

According to ministry figures, authorities have already imposed millions of euros in fines for violations linked to profit-margin caps and breaches of the Code of Conduct.
