Greece launches public consultation on equal pay bill incorporating EU directive
Greece's Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance on Wednesday launched a public consultation on a draft bill aimed at strengthening pay equality between men and women by transposing a European Union directive into national legislation.
The proposed legislation incorporates Directive (EU) 2023/970 of the European Parliament and the Council, adopted on May 10, 2023, and seeks to eliminate gender-based disparities in employee remuneration.
The draft bill consists of 45 articles and will remain open for public consultation until June 17 through the government's online consultation platform.
Commenting on the initiative, Labor and Social Insurance Minister Niki Kerameus said employee compensation should be determined by the quality of work and professional skills rather than gender.
According to the minister, the bill introduces specific obligations at two stages of the employment process — prior to recruitment and after hiring — with the aim of enhancing transparency, accountability and oversight mechanisms in the labor market.
Kerameus said the proposed measures are intended to strengthen confidence in the labor market while promoting equal opportunities for all employees.
