Non-Muslim minorities in Turkey are Peaceful while the Turkish minority in Western Thrace is concerned

The spiritual leader Patriarch Bartholomew of the Non-Muslim (Greek) Minority and Orthodoxy in İstanbul enjoys the possibilities of a happy life given by Turkey, while the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace and the elected muftis are facing with injustice.

The religious leader of the Non-Muslim (Greek) Minority and the Greek Patriarch Bartholomew went to Trabzon at noon of Sunday (October 14th) to see the restoration works continuing for 3 years. “We are glad for having the opportunity to come to Trabzon, to the Black Sea again. The restoration of this substantial temple and the transfer to the next generation is satisfactory,” said Bartholomew.

“Mr. President and our government show great interest in faith tourism”

“Mr. President and our government show great interest in faith tourism,” said Patriarch  Bartholomew. Bartholomew also said, “We, as Patriarchy are also interested in the protection of the faith tourism and the temples. We are glad when these kinds of works and restorations are made. We congratulate the related offices. We hope to celebrate at the rituals of Virgin Mary Day on August 15 as in the past year with the permission of the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Culture. I am hopeful for everything. I believe that everything will be better.”

Buildings remained from the Ottoman period in Greece are left to their fate

Historical works such as mosques, hammams, and bridges remained from the Ottoman period in Greece are not protected and are systematically destroyed. Most of these works are left to disappear. The government, under the name of restoration, demolishes these Turkish-Islamic works or convert them to a museum or storage with some other excuses. The researches show that most of the Ottoman works especially in Thessaloniki are destroyed. Those who are not destroyed yet are used as bars, cinema, and buildings of the entertainment industry. In the past days, Aslan Pasha mosque in Ioannina which was damaged by the hurricane has taken place in the media.

The situation of the minorities in Turkey is developing while in Greece is worsening

Turkey as a state, keeps providing rights more than the Treaty of Lausanne and Constitution to the spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Community in Istanbul which is in the position of the Patriarchy and clerics and also belongs to the minority status.

The President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his last visit to the Western Thrace in Gümülcine said that as a state, it is the statement of the esteem and the reflexivity to the human and minority rights and to to the non-muslim minorities living in the country. Greece should also react in this way, at least should not violate the rights of the Turkish Minority.

The Turkish Minority in Western Thrace which is the counterpart of the Orthodox Minority in Istanbul still faces with violation of their rights according to the Treaty of Lausanne and international human and minority rights by Greece.

Extra rights to the non-muslim minority

As known, even though the missions and responsibilities of the Greek Patriarchy according to the Treaty of Lausanne are limited with Istanbul, they also establish metropolitan offices and celebrate their rituals all around the country even in places where no any Christian communities exist owing to the tolerant minority policy of Turkey. In this way, they try to increase their supporters and become effective with Orthodoxy propaganda all around the country.

Patriarch travels to the monasteries and churches in Turkey while Muftis in Greece travel to the court

While it is the case in Turkey, the religious institutions of the Turks in Western Thrace are still under occupation.

Greece has arbitrarily seized the religious institutions which are in autonomous and special status and has been violating the human rights with various regulations. Greece does not recognize the religious leaders which are elected by the minority and sentence them to prison with various excuses.

Last but not least, religious trips to the Ottoman mosques in the context of faith tourism outside of the Western Thrace are not permitted which are demanded by the Western Thrace Religious Commissary Association found by Turkish minority member, Greek citizens.

The Muslim-Turks which are left as the counterpart of the non-muslim minority in İstanbul under the warranty of the Lausanne Treaty with “minority status”, appreciate the application of positive discrimination by the Turkish state to minorities and expect the same response from the Greek State. In order to make this dream come true the elected representatives, NGOs and the minority media keep struggling with a fever.
