St. George Church restoration set to open fresh window on Cappadocia

The restoration of the historic St. George Church in Yesilhisar, the district known as Cappadocia’s gate in Kayseri, is expected to bring a new tourism boost to the region once works are finished. Local stakeholders say the site will move quickly into the list of must-see destinations in Cappadocia.

Why this hillside church matters to global visitors

Guzeloz, widely known as the birthplace of St. George—a major figure for Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican communities—lies within Yesilhisar.

The surrounding landscape stands out for fairy chimneys (tall, cone-shaped rock formations carved by erosion), rock-cut caves, and numerous churches, making the area a natural stop for culturally minded travelers.

A personal request that sparked a search

Omer Tosun, head of the Cappadocia Area Tourism Investors Association and honorary consul of Brazil, noted that St. George—revered in many countries—holds a special place for visitors. He recalled meeting a Brazilian film producer at a hotel who asked, “Take me to the village of the Cappadocian Saint.”

Guides then traced the route to Guzeloz, found the church, and watched Brazilian tourists tour the interior. Some reportedly wept before a wall painting of St. George and explained its spiritual importance.

Restoration positions the site for respectful visits

According to Tosun, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has launched the restoration. He said the church will be “a place of respect even if not a pilgrimage site,” adding that this new destination could help lift overnight stays.

He also shared that he sent photos of the works to the Brazilian producer, who replied, “I need to come there right away.”

Neighboring heritage waits in the wings

Close to Guzeloz, Baskoy hopes to step into the tourism circuit with its collapsing but historic Greek houses and a stone primary school dated 1913.

As restoration proceeds in the church between Guzeloz and Baskoy, local figures expect the broader area to stand out more strongly on travel itineraries.

Tosun underlined that opening a fresh destination in Cappadocia would support both tourism and faith-based respect for the site, saying the move “will contribute positively to the promotion of our country and our region, and guest numbers will increase.”
