Report from non-governmental organisations in Greece to the European Commission on the gradual deterioration of the rule of law in the country.

Independent non-governmental organisations, including the Hellenic League for Human Rights and Vouliwatch, reported to the European Commission the constant violation of the rule of law in Greece and the institutional decline in the country.

In a report submitted to the European Commission last March, it is noted that the principle of the rule of law is constantly violated in Greece and that the decline in public institutions in the country has reached an alarming level. In this context, the Hellenic League for Human Rights calls on the European Commission to make specific and strict recommendations for Greece to effectively comply with the rule of law and EU values.

“The fact that independent non-governmental organisations operating in our country Greece, call on the European Commission to take steps against the systematic violation of the rule of law in our country is a very serious warning to the government.

In addition to the resolution of the European Parliament on this issue and the harsh criticism from Europe, this warning made directly from within the country is a declaration of the obvious.

In our country, the rule of law and democracy have been under great threat in recent years, but the government is still trying to cover up the facts instead of taking steps on this issue.

The politicized higher judiciary in our country has been ignoring and not executing the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the associations of our community for the past 16 years, despite all the warnings of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. Now someone’s true colours have been shown!

The government must take into account the warnings and criticisms coming from within the country and from Europe regarding this negative situation regarding the rule of law, which has seriously damaged our country’s reputation in the international arena, and as an old member of the EU, it must take the necessary steps urgently, without turning its back on the facts’’ said Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF).
