Gümülcine (Komotini) hospital launches free afternoon surgeries

Hospital Director Elena Rofaela described the launch as a “very important moment” and “a step forward in upgrading healthcare services and improving access to scheduled surgeries for the citizens of Rhodope.” Speaking to ERT Komotinis, she emphasized that patients can now undergo operations without financial burden and with reduced waiting times, improving the flow of cases and easing surgical backlogs.
For hospitals to be eligible to offer afternoon surgeries, they must continue to conduct regular morning procedures—ideally in greater numbers—and maintain a waiting list of over four months. While Gümülcine (Komotini) Hospital currently has relatively few patients waiting that long, Rofaela noted, “Our goal is to reduce this waiting time even further.”
The additional compensation for medical staff performing afternoon surgeries is covered by Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The hospital’s administration aims to gradually expand the program to include all medical specialties with interested doctors.
Rofaela also expressed her gratitude to the hospital’s medical, nursing, and administrative staff for their dedication to the initiative, and thanked the public for their trust and support.
