Xanthi Workers' Union protests NATO drill in Thrace
The Private Sector and Retail Workers’ Union of Xanthi has voiced its opposition to the NATO military exercise “Immediate Response 25,” currently taking place in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The exercise, part of NATO’s broader “Defender 2025” operational framework, runs from May 26 to June 9 and includes forces from 29 countries. It features live-fire drills, cyber defense scenarios, and river-crossing operations.
In a public statement, the union expressed concern over Greece’s involvement in NATO military planning, warning that it could place local communities at risk. The use of regional infrastructure—such as the ports of Alexandroupoli and Kavala, along with local military facilities—was highlighted as a factor that could make the area a potential military target.
“The drills do not serve the safety of working people,” the union stated, adding that such activities transform the region into a staging ground for war plans rather than contributing to peace and stability.
The union called for the return of Greek troops stationed abroad and demanded an end to the shipment of military equipment to conflict zones.
It also urged local workers to reject military operations and strategies that, in its view, do not reflect the real needs of society.
