The city of Xanthi has launched an innovative and eco-friendly initiative to address its growing pigeon problem in the central square by deploying trained birds of prey.

The program, approved by the Municipality, aims to naturally deter pigeons using falcons and other raptors as biological predators.

The initiative comes in response to increasing concerns over hygiene, cleanliness, and damage to public monuments and infrastructure caused by pigeon droppings. According to a report by the Directorate of Environment and Quality of Life, the species Columba livia—commonly known as the feral pigeon—can pose serious public health risks and contribute to the degradation of urban spaces.

The plan will unfold in three phases:

Acclimatization: Introducing the birds of prey to the urban environment.

Active Deterrence: Daily flights over the square to reduce pigeon presence.

Maintenance: Periodic visits to ensure long-term effectiveness.

The program will run for five months and be carried out by expert trainers specializing in bird control methods. The use of raptors creates a naturally hostile environment for pigeons, encouraging them to leave without resorting to toxic substances or invasive techniques.

Officials emphasize that the project not only addresses a pressing urban issue but also promotes ecological awareness among residents, urging the public to stop feeding birds in open areas.

This biological deterrent strategy positions Xanthi as a pioneer in sustainable urban wildlife management, setting a positive example for other cities facing similar challenges.
