Union of Private Employees and Retail Workers of Xanthi: “No to 13-hour workdays”

The Union of Private Employees and Retail Workers of Xanthi has strongly condemned the Greek government's new bill that allows for 13-hour workdays, describing it as a “monstrosity” and a “made-to-order policy for employers.”

In a public statement, the union warns that this bill continues the assault on workers' rights, following the controversial labor reforms introduced under Ministers Hatzidakis and Georgiadis. According to the union, the proposed legislation increases unpaid working hours, reduces employer insurance contributions, and promotes further labor exploitation.

The union accuses the government of legalizing unpaid overtime, expanding part-time and rotational work, and enabling employers to keep workers in a state of constant “standby.” It also rejects claims made by the Minister of Labor that employees themselves are requesting 13-hour shifts, stating that any such requests stem from the dire need to survive due to extremely low wages.

The statement highlights a rise in workplace accidents in the region and emphasizes the urgent need for stable working hours, respect for workers’ rights, and improved health and safety measures at workplaces.

The union calls on all workers to organize, resist, and demand the following:

  • Repeal of all anti-labor legislation and restoration of collective bargaining,
  • A 7-hour workday, 5-day workweek, and 35-hour workweek with stable employment and rights,
  • Substantial wage increases with an automatic adjustment clause,
  • Unemployment benefits without restrictive conditions,
  • Improved health and safety standards in workplaces.

The union concludes by stating that the bill will not pass and urges an escalation of struggles to defend workers' rights.
