Historic Bayezid Mosque in Dimetoka (Didymoteicho) set to reopen by end of August

Mendoni was accompanied during the visit by Culture Ministry Secretary-General Olympia Vikatou and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis.

According to reports, restoration of the historic mosque is expected to be completed by the end of August 2026, when the building is scheduled to reopen to visitors.

Cultural destination planned for Didymoteicho

Following the completion of the restoration, landscaping and improvements to the surrounding area are expected to be carried out in cooperation with the Municipality of Didymoteicho.

Authorities aim to have the wider site fully developed as a cultural destination and opened to visitors by the end of the year.

The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen cultural infrastructure and promote the historical heritage of the Evros regional unit.

Additional restoration project planned

Topsidis said that, within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region, another listed building located opposite the Bayezid Mosque is also expected to undergo restoration once the Municipality of Didymoteicho completes the necessary allocations.

The additional project would further contribute to the preservation and development of the historic area surrounding the mosque.

More than €60 million invested in Evros cultural infrastructure

Mendoni said investments in cultural infrastructure across the Evros regional unit have exceeded €60 million since 2019.

According to the minister, the projects have been financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, the ESPA program and national funding.
