Democritus University of Thrace has elected the first woman in its history to serve as rector, marking a significant milestone for one of Greece’s leading higher education institutions.

The appointment represents a historic development for the university, which serves students across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and plays a central role in academic and research activities in northeastern Greece.

University officials described the election as an important step forward for gender representation in higher education leadership. The new rector is expected to oversee the institution’s academic strategy, research initiatives and international partnerships during her term in office.

Founded in 1973, Democritus University of Thrace is among the largest universities in northern Greece, with campuses in Gümülcine, İskeçe, Dedeağaç and Kumçiftliği. The election of its first female rector has drawn considerable attention within academic and regional circles.
