Zacharaki announces €1.5 million infrastructure upgrades at Democritus University of Thrace

The Greek Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki, has signed ministerial decisions for infrastructure maintenance and upgrade projects across six public universities, with a total budget exceeding €7 million. Among them, the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) will receive €1.5 million for urgent repairs and upgrades to its facilities.

These projects, funded under the Ministry’s Sectoral Development Program (2021–2025), aim to improve the functionality and safety of university buildings while enhancing the educational environment for students and staff.

Minister Zacharaki emphasized the importance of infrastructure investments in public universities:

“Upgrading public university facilities is essential for the quality of studies, the daily safety of students and faculty, and the overall developmental outlook of higher education in Greece.”

The six universities benefiting from the program are:

  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
  • Democritus University of Thrace
  • University of Ioannina
  • University of Crete
  • Athens University of Economics and Business
  • Technical University of Crete

The interventions at DUTH span four cities and include:

Xanthi: Renovations at the Department of Architecture, including repairs, electrical and mechanical installations, repainting, and replacements.

Komotini: Construction and electrical/mechanical works at the Law School, both internally and externally.

Didymoteicho: Technical restoration of buildings to house the Departments of Nursing and Psychology.

Kavala: Electrical and building upgrades at student dormitories.

Additional works include specialized studies such as topographic, structural, and fire protection assessments, along with a geotechnical study for slope stabilization in Alexandroupoli.

According to the Ministry, these efforts aim to strengthen DUTH’s operational readiness, especially in remote and regional campuses, and align with the national strategy for sustainable and modern higher education.
