Thrace branch of the Hellenic Geotechnical Chamber (ΓΕΩΤ.Ε.Ε.) issues statement on drought concerns

The Thrace Branch of the Hellenic Geotechnical Chamber (ΓΕΩΤ.Ε.Ε.) has issued a statement addressing the drought issue in the region. The announcement highlights a significant decline in rainfall over the past few years, emphasizing the growing threat of drought.
According to the statement, a notable decrease in average precipitation has been recorded over the last three years, underscoring the impact of the climate crisis in the area. In January and February 2025, rainfall levels were particularly low, with only 9 mm recorded in Fener and 14 mm in Arabacıköy, both in the Rhodope region. The report stresses that these levels are insufficient to meet agricultural and environmental needs.
The ongoing drought is seen as a crucial indicator of the broader effects of climate change in the region. The statement also warns that farmers may face difficulties with corn planting in March and cotton planting in April due to inadequate soil moisture.
