Stricter customs inspections on the agenda

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Hristodoulos Topsidis met with Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) President Giorgos Pitsilis in Alexandroupoli on Thursday, February 27. The meeting was also attended by Regional Executive Secretary Panagiotis Halvatsis.
Strengthening Customs Operations
During the discussions, officials addressed various issues concerning the operation of customs offices, including current shortcomings, challenges, and necessary improvements. The primary focus was on enhancing customs infrastructure and implementing stricter, more effective inspections.
This meeting followed a recent decision by AADE and President Pitsilis to strengthen the organizational capacity of customs offices in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and tighten border control measures.
On-Site Assessment and Immediate Action
It was agreed that an AADE team will visit the region soon to conduct an on-site assessment and initiate necessary interventions.
Governor Topsidis emphasized the importance of customs security, stating:
🗣 “Customs offices in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace are not just border checkpoints. They serve as economic gateways, drivers of regional development, and the first line of defense against smuggling and illegal trade. There is no room for complacency or stagnation in these matters.”
The upcoming measures are expected to enhance regional economic security and combat illicit trade more effectively.
