Restrictions continue on movement and slaughter in Rhodope

As part of the ongoing efforts to control the spread of the small ruminants' plague (Peste des Petits Ruminants - PPR), the General Directorate of Livestock of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food has updated the restrictions imposed on affected areas and the entire country. These measures are in place from August 23rd to August 30th and are aimed at preventing the disease's spread.

Key restrictions include:

Movement Ban: All movements of sheep and goats for fattening, reproduction, and towards summer pastures are prohibited. This also applies to cattle from farms that are health-connected with sheep and goat farms, whether they are housed on the same premises or on different ones that share personnel, vehicles, or equipment, across the entire country. Exceptions are made for movements within each island of the country, excluding Crete.

Slaughter Ban: The movement of animals for slaughter is prohibited in and out of the regions of Trikala, Larissa, Karditsa, Rhodope, Drama, Western Attica, Magnesia, Heraklion, Corinth, Aetolia-Acarnania, and Ilia. In other regions, such movements are allowed under strict biosecurity measures, both for transportation and for personnel involved. Animals are slaughtered in the local slaughterhouses or the nearest one to the farm in question.

Changes from Last Week: The previous week’s decision included a partial ban on movements. With the current decision:

Movement of live animals for slaughter is permitted across Greece under certain conditions, except in regions with confirmed cases and the region of Magnesia (after consultation with local authorities).
All movements of live animals are now allowed in all islands of the country under conditions, except Crete.
The ban on conducting inspections for organic livestock farming is lifted nationwide, except in regions with confirmed cases.

These measures target the PPR virus and work alongside movement restrictions already in place by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace for the smallpox virus. The epidemiological data will be reassessed on August 30th by the General Veterinary Directorate and relevant veterinary authorities to determine targeted actions for disease control and eradication.
