Nea Perifereiaki Anagennisi questions €240M agricultural project funding in Eastern Macedonia–Thrace
Greece’s regional opposition faction Nea Perifereiaki Anagennisi has raised urgent questions over the future of major agricultural infrastructure projects worth more than €240 million in the Eastern Macedonia–Thrace region.
The inquiry comes ahead of the second special accountability session of the regional administration, where officials are expected to clarify planning, prioritization, and funding strategies for the primary sector.
Funding Gap Sparks Concern
According to the faction, a total of 15 project proposals—submitted in cooperation with irrigation bodies (GOEV and TOEV)—have been filed under a special call of Greece’s Rural Development Programme. The proposals are distributed across the region as follows:
However, the total proposed budget exceeds €240 million, significantly surpassing the €150 million funding ceiling allocated nationwide for this call by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
Key Questions to Regional Governor
The faction has formally addressed a set of questions to Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, seeking clarity on:
- How many projects are expected to secure funding, and at what total value
- Whether a prioritization framework has been established for submitted proposals
- What additional agricultural infrastructure projects are planned
- How future projects will be financed beyond current funding limits
- Strategic Importance of the Primary Sector
In their statement, regional council members emphasized that strengthening the primary sector remains a cornerstone of the region’s development strategy. Infrastructure investments—particularly in irrigation and rural systems—are seen as critical for long-term economic sustainability.
The initiative underscores growing scrutiny over resource allocation and development planning in one of Greece’s key agricultural regions.
The inquiry is co-signed by multiple regional councilors, signaling broad political interest in ensuring transparency and strategic coherence in the management of EU-linked rural development funds.
