Topsidis engages with European Investment Bank for Kompsatos Dam Project
The Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Toplides, has made a firm commitment to the completion of the Kompsatos Dam in the municipality of Iasmos, stating, "By the end of my term, this emblematic project will come to life." This is the first time such a strong pledge has been made regarding the project.
The topic was repeatedly raised by representatives from various organizations during the 1st Rural Development Conference of Rodopi, which took place today in Komotini, organized by the local Union of Professional Farmers and Entrepreneurs.
The implementation of the dam has been a long-standing demand for the region, dating back nearly sixty years. The dam will harness Greek surface water resources and irrigate over 200,000 acres, reversing the salinization that has impacted Rodopi, which, starting from the coastal areas of the region, has penetrated deeply into the plains to the north.
As announced by the Governor, by the end of 2026, the feasibility study for the dam will be updated, and at the same time, the search for European funding programs will commence, as it is a large project. The budget for just the lake (without the distribution networks) is estimated at 180 million euros. Toplides has already initiated exploratory discussions with the European Investment Bank.
