Eastern Macedonia and Thrace launches €5 million research and innovation funding call for SMEs
The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Greece has announced a €5 million funding call to support existing micro and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) investing in research, development and innovation. The initiative aims to strengthen business competitiveness and promote higher-value products and services across four priority sectors.
The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (AMTH) has launched a new funding call with a total budget of €5 million to support research and innovation projects by existing micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
According to the regional authority, the programme is designed to encourage investment in research and development while helping businesses transition towards a more innovative, outward-looking and competitive production model.
Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis said the initiative would focus on strengthening the capabilities of SMEs, supporting the adoption of new technologies and enabling companies to expand their market presence.
“With this new €5 million call, we continue to invest in the potential of small and medium-sized enterprises, with an emphasis on research, innovation and the production of high-added-value goods and services,” Topsidis said.
He added that the region aimed to create meaningful opportunities for businesses seeking to develop, improve their competitiveness and reach new markets.
FOUR PRIORITY SECTORS
The funding call covers investment projects aligned with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace’s Regional Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3).
The eligible priority sectors are:

Environment and sustainable development: Initiatives supporting environmental protection and sustainable growth.
Tourism, culture and creative industries: Investments aimed at developing tourism-related activities and creative businesses.

The initiative seeks to direct business investment towards sectors identified as priorities for regional development and innovation.
SUPPORTING REGIONAL COMPETITIVENESS
The €5 million call forms part of the region’s broader effort to strengthen the innovation capacity of local businesses and encourage the development of products and services with greater added value.
By supporting research and development, the regional authority aims to help existing SMEs adopt new technologies, improve productivity and become more competitive in domestic and international markets.
