Eastern Macedonia and Thrace officials visit Brussels to explore EU funding opportunities

A delegation from Greece’s Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has visited Brussels to explore European funding opportunities and identify ways to support the needs of local municipalities.

The delegation was led by Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis and included mayors, deputy regional governors and other officials. During the visit, the group toured the European Parliament, where it was welcomed by Greek MEP Fredis Beleris.

The delegation also attended an information session focusing on European programmes and funding opportunities available to municipalities across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

EU PROGRAMMES FOR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT
Krzysztof Wojcik, a project adviser for the LIFE programme at the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), presented the LIFE programme and its funding opportunities.

Eleni Kefallinou outlined the European Urban Initiative and its potential to support sustainable urban development.

The presentations and subsequent discussion allowed representatives from the region’s municipalities to ask questions and explore how the EU funding instruments could support local projects and development priorities.

STRENGTHENING MUNICIPAL PROJECTS
According to the report published by Thraki.com.gr on October 13, the delegation’s aim was to gain practical knowledge and establish contacts that could help advance project proposals from the region.

The visit focused on improving local authorities’ understanding of European funding mechanisms and identifying opportunities to support municipal needs through EU programmes. The report did not specify any funding awards or approved projects resulting from the visit.
