Water leaks reported at Dedeağaç University Hospital after heavy rainfall
Water entered the emergency department and other areas of Alexandroupoli University General Hospital during rainfall on November 3, raising questions about the quality of renovation works completed just five months earlier.
Footage recorded during the rainfall at Alexandroupoli University General Hospital (PGN Alexandroupolis) showed water leaking into the hospital, including its Emergency Department, according to a report by Efsyn.
Images reportedly showed water accumulating in a second-floor corridor, where cardboard sheets and buckets had been placed to contain the leaks. Complaints also pointed to similar problems in other parts of the hospital.
€11.2 MILLION RENOVATION UNDER SCRUTINY
The incident has drawn attention because the hospital underwent extensive renovation work earlier this year.
On June 5, 2026, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis inaugurated the renovated Emergency Department, which had undergone a €2.5 million modernisation project.
The total cost of renovation works at the hospital reportedly reached €11.2 million.
However, the leaks following the November 3 rainfall have raised questions about whether the investment adequately addressed the building's underlying infrastructure problems.
CONCERNS OVER INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS
Complaints cited by Efsyn allege that the renovation focused primarily on improving the appearance of hospital facilities, while longstanding infrastructure problems remained unresolved.
The allegations include claims that comprehensive waterproofing work was not carried out and that ageing pipe systems and hospital beds were not replaced.
The reported leaks have prompted questions about the scope and quality of the multimillion-euro renovation. An official response from the relevant authorities is awaited.
