MP Zeybek: "Xanthi Hospital Sends an SOS"
Hüseyin Zeybek, an MP from Xanthi and Agricultural Policy Head of the New Left Party, raised a parliamentary question about the severe issues plaguing Xanthi General Hospital. He attributed the hospital's deteriorating state to the government's mismanagement, highlighting its impact on healthcare services in the region.
Zeybek emphasized critical shortages in medical and nursing staff, describing the situation as dire. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been non-operational for nearly four years, and surgical services are severely disrupted. Only emergency surgeries are performed, while others are postponed indefinitely due to staffing shortages. The few medical staff left are stretched thin, with clinics struggling to function and emergency shifts maintained solely through staff dedication.
The MP criticized the government for filling gaps through temporary staff transfers from neighboring areas, which he deemed ineffective. He also noted that advertised positions remain vacant, reflecting the broader neglect of the healthcare system under austerity-focused policies.
Zeybek called for immediate staff recruitment and long-term investment in the hospital's infrastructure. He posed two critical questions to the Minister of Health:
- What immediate measures will the government take to address the hospital's urgent needs?
- What steps will ensure adequate staffing for modern, reliable healthcare in Xanthi?
He concluded by stressing that healthcare is a fundamental social right.
