Rodopi MP Özgür Ferhat has submitted a parliamentary inquiry regarding the registration of dried cherry trees in Rodopi and the impact of climate change on cherry production.

Ferhat highlighted that insufficient winter rainfall in 2024, prolonged summer heatwaves, and persistent drought conditions have severely affected cherry orchards, threatening not only the current yield but also future sustainability.

"Cherry Production Has Declined by Over 30%"
In a written statement, Ferhat emphasized the severity of the damage, stating:

"The decline in cherry production has exceeded 30% in tonnage, directly linked to drought, prolonged northern winds, and over six weeks of extreme heat. The scale of damage is vast, leaving cherry farmers in severe economic distress. Furthermore, this is not a short-term issue—many trees have been permanently damaged, meaning future harvests will also suffer. Supporting affected farmers is crucial for preserving agricultural production and the rural economy in the region."

Parliamentary Inquiry to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food
Ferhat has directed the following questions to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food:

  1. Has a damage assessment been conducted for the dried cherry trees in Rodopi?
  2. Does the ministry plan to compensate affected cherry farmers under the State Economic Support Scheme (KOE) or Article 23 of the Rural Development Program (PAA)?

"The Government Must Act Urgently"
Concluding his statement, Ferhat urged the government to expedite damage assessments and provide financial support:

"We expect the government to swiftly complete damage assessments and provide immediate assistance to the farmers. This support is vital to ensure the continuity of cherry production and safeguard the economic sustainability of local farmers."

The issue remains a critical concern for Rodopi’s agricultural sector, with farmers hoping for prompt government intervention to mitigate their losses.
