Metropolitan Anthimos files €30,000 lawsuit against Millet Newspaper

The incident arose when Millet reported Anthimos’ critical remarks about FEP's success, which was largely supported by the Turkish minority in Greece.
Development of the Lawsuit
After the elections, Metropolitan Anthimos released a video criticizing DEB’s electoral success, describing it as a national threat and questioning Greece’s integration policies. Millet reported the video with Turkish subtitles under the headline: "From the Metropolitan of Alexandroupoli to the Turkish Minority: Subtle Warning; Our Perspective Must Change."
Following this, Anthimos sent a formal notice to Millet on July 24, 2024. On August 6, 2024, the newspaper responded, but Anthimos deemed it unsatisfactory. As a result, he filed a lawsuit on September 12, 2024, with the Alexandroupoli Single-Member Court of First Instance, accusing Millet of spreading false information and damaging his reputation. The trial date is set for November 20, 2024.
Anthimos’ Statements
In his video, Anthimos expressed concern about FEP’s success, saying: "The results of the European Parliament elections show that the focus was not Brussels but nationalism, which could bring serious issues. Despite Greece's long-term efforts to integrate the Thracian population, FEP’s success confirms this concern. Yesterday’s election results, coupled with Turkey's revisionist policies, demonstrate that the situation requires a new perspective."
Millet's Coverage and Reactions
Millet reported on Anthimos' statements and reflected the Turkish minority’s reaction to the remarks. The article emphasized that such comments from Greek Orthodox Church leaders often fuel ethnic and religious tensions, jeopardizing social harmony.
The Lawsuit Against Millet
The lawsuit is seen as part of an ongoing legal battle between Millet and various actors in Greece. Millet, which represents the voice of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, has faced multiple legal challenges over the years. Its owners have previously been sentenced to months of imprisonment and fines totaling up to €500,000 for various cases.
Continuing the Struggle of the Turkish Minority
Despite the lawsuit, Millet’s representatives have affirmed their commitment to their cause, stating: “Nothing will deter us from defending the just cause of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace.” The newspaper will continue to be the voice of the minority and resist any legal pressures aimed at silencing it.
The Importance of the Case for Social Peace
The lawsuit has once again brought Yunanistan’s minority policies under scrutiny. The incident highlights how statements from influential figures can fuel ethnic and religious divisions, threatening social cohesion. Rather than viewing the election results as a national threat, commentators suggest this moment should be an opportunity to foster dialogue, national unity, and international peace.
