Metlen brings first U.S.-origin LNG cargo to Dedeağaç FSRU
The first U.S.-origin cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) arrived this week at the Dedeağaç (Alexandroupolis) offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in northeastern Greece, destined for the Bulgarian market, Metlen said on Monday.
Accordign to tovima, the shipment was transported by Metlen’s international supply and trading arm. The company ranks as the largest private consumer and trader of natural gas in the region and one of the biggest LNG importers in Greece.
In a statement, Metlen said the delivery marks an important step in strengthening energy security and aims to help guarantee diversified supply routes across the Balkans. Metlen Energy Supply & Trading Chief Executive Panagiotis Kanellopoulos welcomed the arrival of the first U.S.-origin LNG cargo in a video published by the company.
The development comes as Bulgaria, Greece and Romania seek to accelerate the creation of a strategic north–south energy and transport corridor linking the Aegean Sea with the Black and Baltic Seas.
Earlier this month, the three countries signed a memorandum of understanding in Brussels under the newly established Black Sea–Aegean vertical corridor platform, with strong backing from the European Commission and the European Investment Bank.
