Dedeağaç Peace Committee marks 81 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings
The Dedeağaç (Alexandroupolis) Peace Committee held a public event at the city's lighthouse on Wednesday, Aug. 5, marking 81 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The committee criticized what it described as Greece's growing involvement in NATO military planning and the use of Alexandroupolis (Dedeağaç's) port and infrastructure for military operations.
It said more than 47% of military equipment sent to Ukraine had passed through the port, while U.S. and NATO forces have also used the city as a transit hub.
Concerns over public spending
The committee questioned spending of more than 50 million euros on port expansion and a new regional road, arguing that greater resources are needed for healthcare, education, fire protection and disaster response.
It also warned that the city's LNG terminal could increase security risks amid rising regional tensions, particularly because of Greece's role as a gateway for U.S. LNG.
The group called for greater public awareness of what it described as the growing military and geopolitical risks facing the region.
