Komotini at the center of European dialogue on sustainable cities

KOMOTINI PRAISED AS A MODEL OF GREEN INNOVATION
Komotini was highlighted as a shining example of green and participatory innovation during the #ActGreen international conference, held in Prahova and Bucharest, Romania. The event was part of the European program “Active Cities – Green Cities” and brought together partners from across the continent to share experiences and solutions for sustainable urban development.
GREEK INITIATIVE PRESENTED ON THE EUROPEAN STAGE
Representing Greece, the organization System and G introduced the local initiative “The Gardens of Komotini” — a comprehensive approach to sustainable development through urban gardening. The project emphasizes intergenerational collaboration, environmental education, and the cultivation of a sense of belonging in public spaces.
This initiative was recognized as a best practice in urban revitalization for its gentle and socially conscious interventions, which successfully engage the local population and reintegrate nature into the urban landscape. By creating community gardens, the project strengthens social ties, encourages youth participation, and redefines public space as a realm of cooperation and collective care.
A PLATFORM FOR KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE
The #ActGreen conference served as an important crossroads for exchanging expertise and best practices among European cities and regions working towards a fair, green, and inclusive transition. Throughout the sessions, participants reaffirmed the vital role of local authorities, civil society organizations, and active citizens in achieving the goals set out by the European Green Deal.
System and G, guided by the trust of the local community and a firm commitment to sustainable development principles, continues to promote initiatives that foster environmental awareness, civic participation, and position Komotini as a European model for green urban living.
“The experience in Romania was a fertile ground for the exchange of ideas and confirmed that local innovation can have global resonance. The Gardens of Komotini is not just a project — it is a living statement of participatory environmental policy,” the System and G delegation emphasized.
