Municipality of Gümülcine joins European Initiative “Urban Agenda for the EU”
The Municipality of Komotini has officially been accepted into the “Cities of Equality” Thematic Partnership under the Urban Agenda for the EU (UAEU), the European Union’s key intergovernmental initiative for sustainable and fair urban development.
Gümülcine is one of only five cities across Europe to participate on equal terms alongside national authorities, regional administrations, and major European institutions.
Among the partners in the initiative are:
The European Commission (Directorates-General REGIO, JUST, EMPL, REFORM, ENER, EAC, RTD, JRC, as well as the General Secretariat)
European umbrella associations such as Eurocities, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)
National authorities, including France’s National Agency for Territorial Cohesion and Austria’s AustriaTech
Major metropolitan cities such as Rome and Barcelona.
According to Gümülcine’s official announcement, the city was invited by the coordinators of the partnership, who recognized Komotini as a good practice example in equality, accessibility, and social inclusion.
Through its participation in the “Cities of Equality” partnership, Gümülcine gains direct access to European city networks, specialized expertise, policy tools, and proposals that will shape future EU legislation and funding mechanisms related to equality and social cohesion.
“Our participation in the ‘Cities of Equality’ Partnership is an honorary recognition of the Municipality of Gümülcine’s efforts in the field of social inclusion. At the same time, it paves the way for new collaborations and policy tools that will directly benefit our citizens and highlight Komotini as a point of reference for equality at the European level,” the municipality’s statement emphasized.
