The redevelopment project for Freedom Square — locally known as Platia Eleftherias — has officially been included in the “Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2021–2027” regional development program. Authorities announced that the total budget of the project will amount to €2.39 million.
The initiative, titled “Redevelopment of Freedom Square and Reorganization of the Surrounding Road Network,” was approved by Christodoulos Topsidis and will be implemented by the Municipality of İskeçe.
Focus on Accessibility, Traffic Flow, and Urban Functionality
The project aims to improve accessibility, traffic circulation, and the overall functionality of İskeçe’s city center through extensive redesign works around the square and nearby roads.
Renovation plans covering approximately 4,000 square meters include the modernization of the square into a more integrated public space while giving greater visual prominence to local monuments. Officials also plan to create a balanced urban environment combining green spaces, pedestrian pathways, cycling lanes, and outdoor seating areas.
The redevelopment will additionally include:
- Reorganization of vehicle traffic
- Expansion of sidewalks
- Construction of a bicycle lane network
- Installation of tactile guidance paths for visually impaired residents
- Infrastructure and Road Upgrades Included
Authorities stated that the works will affect sections of Brokumi Street, Megalou Rematos Street, 40 Churches Street, and Kavala Street.
The project also includes upgrades to:
- Public lighting systems
- Rainwater drainage infrastructure
- Traffic lights
- Street illumination across the surrounding area
- Governor Christodoulos Topsidis described the redevelopment as a significant investment for both İskeçe and its residents, emphasizing that European Union funding is being utilized to create modern, functional, and accessible public spaces that improve everyday quality of life.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
