Islamophobic attack conducted in Western Thrace, İskeçe Mufti condemns
In a statement issued on September 13, Trampa said the incident had caused “great sadness and concern,” stressing that any insult or attack targeting religious beliefs, sacred values or places of worship threatens social peace and the culture of peaceful coexistence.
“Respect for sacred values is a shared responsibility”
Trampa emphasized that respect for sacred values, regardless of religious affiliation, is a common responsibility of humanity and civilization.
He said the incident should not be viewed solely as an attack on a place of worship, arguing that such acts also damage society’s shared values and respect for people of different faiths.
“An act incompatible with Christianity”
Trampa also described the incident as incompatible with Christian values, particularly because the offensive writing allegedly targeted Allah.
“As soon as we learned of this disgraceful incident, which is also incompatible with Christianity and directly targets Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, we went to the site to examine the incident and took the necessary steps with the authorities,” Trampa said.
He added that the incident was examined on site and that the relevant authorities were contacted following the vandalism.
Mosque imam files police complaint
Trampa said that following the inspection, Çınar Mosque Imam Fatih Kocaahmet filed a complaint with the police.
The Mufti of İskeçe (Xanthi) and chairman of the Consultative Council reiterated that attacks and acts of disrespect against places of worship, sacred sites and religious beliefs cannot be accepted.
“We strongly condemn and denounce this heinous act targeting Çınar Mosque,” the statement said.
Call for perpetrators to be brought to justice
Trampa called for those responsible to be identified and arrested as soon as possible and brought before the courts to receive the punishment they deserve.
An investigation into the offensive graffiti on the mosque’s exterior wall is expected to determine those responsible, with the incident to be assessed by the relevant judicial authorities.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of respect for places of worship and sacred values in Western Thrace, where communities of different faiths live alongside one another.
