Heatwave protection measures: What the Regional Unit of İskeçe recommends
As extreme temperatures continue to affect the region, the Regional Unit of İskeçe has issued a set of protection measures and health guidelines to help residents cope with the heatwave.
Medical Conditions Due to High Temperatures and How to Handle Them
Heatstroke is a severe condition that may occur when body temperature rises above 40.5°C. Key symptoms include:
- Red, hot, and dry skin (sweating stops)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness, confusion, disorientation
- Seizures and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness or coma
Until the individual is transferred to a hospital, the following actions are recommended:
- Move the person to a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated area
- Apply ice packs or cold compresses to the neck, armpits, and groin area
- Immerse the individual in a cold bath or use cold showers or sprays
- Offer small sips of cool fluids such as water
High-Risk Groups Include:
- Elderly individuals, infants, and small children
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- People with obesity or chronic illnesses (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dementia)
- Individuals with acute illnesses like fever or gastroenteritis
- Patients taking medications such as diuretics or insulin — they should consult their doctors for possible dose adjustments
General Heatwave Protection Guidelines:
- Stay in air-conditioned areas
- Wear light, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing
- Use hats and sunglasses when outdoors
- Avoid strenuous physical labor and long journeys on non-air-conditioned public transport
- Take multiple lukewarm showers during the day
- Eat small, light meals rich in fruits and vegetables
- Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and natural juices
- Elderly individuals should not be left alone — someone should check on them regularly
- Workplaces should provide air conditioning or at least ceiling fans
Additional Caution During High Pollution Events:
- Individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and those sensitive to air pollution, are advised to remain indoors
- Avoid intense physical activity, as it may irritate the respiratory system
Public Cooling Area:
Due to the ongoing heatwave, the air-conditioned conference room on the 2nd floor of the Regional Unit of Xanthi will be open to the public Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
