Gümülcine–Bulgaria (Makaza) road reopens after emergency repair works
The Gümülcine–Bulgaria road via the Makaza border crossing has been reopened to traffic following the completion of repair and maintenance works, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The route had been temporarily closed after a ground subsidence occurred at the 7th kilometer of the Gümülcine–Bulgaria vertical road axis, raising safety concerns and prompting immediate intervention by regional authorities.
After days of technical assessments and repair operations, the road was officially reopened to vehicular traffic as of May 28, 2026.
During the restoration process, Deputy Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Rıdvan Molla İsa, and Regional Advisor Ahmet Osman Pehlivan visited the site to inspect the works and receive updates from engineers and technical staff overseeing the project.
Following their on-site evaluation, authorities confirmed that necessary maintenance and reinforcement measures had been successfully completed, allowing the route to safely resume operations.
The Makaza border road is one of the key transport corridors connecting Greece with Bulgaria, playing an important role in regional mobility, trade, and cross-border travel between the two countries.
