Greece seizes 2 tons of unsafe dairy products from Bulgaria
Greek authorities seized and destroyed more than two tons of dairy products from Bulgaria after discovering that the shipment was being transported without proper refrigeration, posing a serious risk to public health.
The products were found during an inspection by the Directorate of Controls and Organized Transactions (DEOS) of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) at the Makaza–Komotini (Gümülcine) border road crossing in northeastern Greece.
The shipment was being transported in a foreign-registered van that did not have a refrigerated compartment, according to authorities.
Veterinary inspectors confirm health risk
Working with inspectors from the Veterinary Service of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, DEOS officials determined that the dairy products were unsafe for consumption due to the complete absence of temperature control.
The entire shipment was confiscated and destroyed, while strict penalties were imposed for violations related to food safety regulations and illegal transport conditions.
Authorities also found that the vehicle was overloaded by 1,500 kilograms, resulting in additional sanctions.
Crackdown on illegal food trade continues
AADE said targeted inspections against the illegal transport and sale of products will continue across Greece's road network.
The agency said DEOS analysts are focusing on preventing the illegal movement of agricultural and dairy products, protecting public health, ensuring fair market operations and safeguarding state revenues.
