Frost damage in Western Thrace causes widespread crop losses
SEVERE IMPACT ON FRUIT ORCHARDS
Following the agricultural frost event that struck several parts of Western Thrace on 8 April, Dimitris Pantazis, Head of the Alexandroupoli branch of the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) and Regional Coordinator for Thrace, made public statements outlining the extent of the damage.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Pantazis highlighted the serious challenges facing local farmers, describing a grim situation in the aftermath of the cold snap. Major damage was reported in almond, nectarine, peach, and some pear varieties. In the Rhodope and Xanthi regions, cherry and kiwi trees were also significantly affected.
LIMITED DAMAGE IN EVROS
In the Evros region, damage to green asparagus and peas was described as more limited in both scale and severity. However, early table grape varieties grown in vineyards were hit hard across affected areas, including Xanthi, Rhodope, and extending into Evros.
ON-SITE ASSESSMENTS AND COMPENSATION TIMELINE
Pantazis emphasized that ELGA assessment teams are currently conducting on-site evaluations in Evros, Rhodope, and Xanthi to ensure fair and accurate reporting. Compensation payments will be determined after harvest time, once parcel-specific production losses become clear.
RECENT AND UPCOMING PAYMENTS
On a broader scale, ELGA announced that on 10 April, a total of €1.665 million was disbursed to the final 546 beneficiaries for damage claims from 2024. Additionally, under the Emergency Planning Policy (PSEA) program, compensation is now ready for olive, pomegranate, and alfalfa growers affected by the 2021 frost and floods. Of the €2.5 million total payout, approximately €500,000 will go to farmers in the Evros, Xanthi, and Rhodope regions.
