Severe storm hits Dedeağaç causing widespread damage

A severe storm struck Alexandroupolis (Dedeağaç) on the evening of Saturday, January 10, leaving unprecedented damage across the city. The storm, which began around 7:30 PM, intensified rapidly, with wind speeds reported between 150 and 155 km/h (Beaufort scale 12).

The strong winds uprooted numerous trees in the city center and along the coastline. Large branches fell onto parked cars, while motorcycles were displaced and outdoor furniture—including tables, chairs, and heaters—was blown meters away. Trash and recycling containers toppled, and awnings sustained significant damage. Several businesses reported overturned and broken beverage refrigerators, and minor structural damage occurred in indoor sports facilities. Power outages were reported in various municipal lighting systems throughout the city.

Dimokritos Airport also experienced the impact of the storm. Three training aircraft in the open area were overturned and damaged by the strong winds. Airport lights, windows, and vehicle entry gates suffered minor damage. Authorities confirmed that all scheduled flights continued as planned despite the storm.

No casualties or injuries have been reported.

In response, local police, fire brigades, and municipal teams were deployed immediately to clear fallen trees and debris, cordon off hazardous areas, and ensure public safety. Citizens were advised to avoid going outside unless necessary.

The Alexandroupolis Municipality announced that teams from the Northern Greece Natural Disaster Damage Assessment Authority (DAFK–BE) will arrive on Monday, January 12, to conduct official damage assessments. Affected business owners and residents are requested to submit damage reports to the municipal building starting at 10:00 AM, including photographic evidence of losses.
