Flooding and river overflows hit Rodopi, emergency crews on alert in Gümülcine
Heavy rainfall caused river overflows and flooding across Rodopi on Tuesday, as intense downpours hit already saturated ground, authorities said.
Rainfall reached up to 120 millimetres in parts of the prefecture, with floodwaters inundating rivers, farmland and urban areas. Conditions worsened around midday, with low visibility reported.
The Fire Service responded to numerous calls across Western Thrace to pump water from flooded basements and rescue motorists after roads turned into torrents.
Emergency alerts were issued via the 112 system in the settlements of Menetler and Kalkanca in the Municipality of Gümülcine (Komotini), as rivers overflowed.
Municipal crews in Gümülcine (Komotini) are continuing clean-up operations, clearing debris and mud from affected sections of the road network.
