Famellos blames government for flood crisis in Meriç (Evros)
Socratis Famellos, leader of SYRIZA, has accused the government of incompetence as severe flooding hits the Meriç (Evros) region in northeastern Greece.
In a social media post, Famellos said more than 100,000 acres of land have been submerged, with embankments collapsing, settlements under threat and farmers watching their crops destroyed.
“Evros is facing disaster,” he wrote, arguing that the situation is not solely due to extreme weather but to “extreme governmental incompetence.”
He criticized authorities for failing to secure agreements over the management of the Arda River’s waters and for neglecting infrastructure and public policy planning. According to Famellos, these shortcomings result in drought during the summer and devastating floods in winter.
Referring to a series of recent challenges — including subsidy delays, rising prices and environmental pressures — he said residents of the remote Evros region are repeatedly confronted with floods in winter and drought and wildfires in summer.
The government has attributed the flooding to severe weather conditions, while emergency services continue efforts to manage the impact in the affected areas.
