Greece launches €15 million project to modernize Çörekköy border crossing
Greece has launched the next phase of a €15 million project to modernize the Çörekköy (Kastanies) border crossing in Meriç (Evros) following the signing of a strategic project agreement between the Interior Ministry, the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (HCAP), the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace, and the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The project envisages relocating the existing border crossing closer to the frontier with Türkiye and replacing it with a modern facility designed to improve efficiency and accommodate growing cross-border traffic.
Preparatory work to begin
The signing of the agreement clears the way for technical studies and administrative procedures required before construction can begin.
Meiç (Evros) Reconstruction and Recovery Coordinator Giorgos Kellis recently visited the Kastanies border crossing to assess infrastructure needs and review daily operations, including traffic volumes and operational challenges at the Greek-Turkish border.
Kellis said the new Kastanies crossing is expected to become one of Greece's most modern land border gateways, strengthening connections between the European Union, the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
