Five arrested for allegedly smuggling migrants in northern Greece
Five suspected migrant smugglers have been arrested in Greece’s northeastern Meriç (Evros) region for allegedly transporting migrants in cars, police said Wednesday.
25 migrants found in vehicles
The suspects, all foreign nationals, were arrested on Tuesday in separate operations near the border with Turkiye.
Police said they were allegedly transporting a total of 25 migrants. In one case, eight people, including the driver, were found packed into a single vehicle.
Thousands cross the Greek-Turkish border
Greece remains a key entry point for migrants seeking to travel onward to other European countries.
Despite a border fence covering much of the Meriç (Evros) frontier, more than 4,600 people have been detected entering the area since the start of the year, according to authorities.
